The Litter Problem

The litter problem in our community is real.  Take a closer look at your street, your home, your business, and the roads and highways.  Litter is there.

Litter is ugly.
Litter is costly.
Litter decreases property value.
Litter hurts economic growth and tourism.
Litter lessens community pride.
Litter spoils natural beauty.

Knowing why people litter helps stop litter

  • People litter where they feel no sense of ownership.
  • People litter where litter has already accumulated.
  • People litter where they perceive others will pick-up.

Knowing where litter comes from helps stop litter

There are seven sources of litter:

  • Household garbage improperly contained
  • Commercial waste improperly contained
  • Loading docks
  • Construction sites
  • Uncovered trucks
  • Motorists/boaters
  • Pedestrians

Knowing how litter moves helps stop litter

Wind, rain, animals, and traffic move and blow litter from place to place.

What can you do to help stop litter?

  • Hold on to garbage until you can put it in a trash can.
  • Keep a litterbag in your car.
  • Secure your truck bed with a tarp or tie materials down.
  • Use an ashtray or ash receptacle.  Cigarette butts are litter too!
  • Make sure your household garbage containers are secured with a lid.
  • Encourage judges and law enforcement officers to enforce the existing litter laws.  Convictions for littering carry a $500 fine and community service time.
  • Apply peer pressure to others to follow the law.
